School Streets

Tackling congestion at the school gates

school gates traffic

Many school experience chaotic traffic scenes at the beginning and end of the school day

The City of Edinburgh Council have taken the decision to limit traffic in the street directly outside the school at key times, meaning that parents will not be able to park right at the gates to drop their children off.

We are aiming to create a safer, more pleasant environment the scheme promotes active travel to school by walking and cycling, in turn reducing congestion and pollution in the area.

More than 30 schools across the city originally expressed an interest in participating in the pilot, and 11 schools were finally selected. The chosen locations had been experiencing road safety issues due to the number of drivers bringing cars too close to school gates.

Final plans for the School Streets pilot, which is a commitment of the Local Transport Strategy 2014-19, were approved by Transport and Environment Committee on 25th  August 2015, and the first schemes began on 22nd September.
